Save Money and the Environment by Saving Gas

We all know gas prices these days are crazy and that our environment is in need. So save money with these tips that will also help the Earth…hey, how often do you really get to support a cause without spending more money?
- Carpool –A group of people traveling together and sharing the cost of gas will automatically save money. Aside from this, many cities actually provide additional motivation to people interested in car pooling, everything from special commuter lanes to payments to people participating in the carpool –San Mateo offers everyone involved in a carpool $60. Check with your city government to see if they offer any incentives.
- Bike ride –Get in shape and don’t spend a dime, way to go. The downside is that it can be dangerous depending on the roads you’re taking, and sometimes you end up really sweaty.
- Public transit –Busses, subways and more may not be the most fun ways to travel, but they’re way cheaper than driving. Unless your city is served by a really amazing mass transit system, be sure you plan plenty of travel time and check the routes ahead of time to make sure the stops are close enough to your starting point and destination to make it worth it.
- Take a limo –It sometimes sounds crazy, but if you are traveling with too many people to take a single car or taxi, sometimes a limo can actually be the cheapest way to go. The advantage is that the car charges per hour, so for 10+ people using a limo company specials, it can often come down to less than $15 an hour per person. As a bonus, you all get to ride in one car together.
- Rent a car –If you’re going somewhere out of your area, frequently renting a car is a great way to save if you have an older-gas guzzling car. To sweeten the deal, Heartz has a deal with Travelocity, where if you book with them through the travel site, you get a bonus free tank of gas. More details here.
Whatever you do, try not to get sucked into a car dealer’s promotion for free gas when you buy a new car. In the long run, the cost of buying a brand new car instead of one that’s a few years old will be way more than that few years’ worth of gas.
