  1. Inexpensive Eats Near the Tourist Center of San Diego

    June 19, 2008 by ruetheday

Balboa Park is one of the best places in San Diego in a lot of ways. It is a crucial piece of San Diego history, the most agriculturally diverse area in the county and holds a plethora of local museums. The World Famous San Diego Zoo is also here. Of course, the problem with this area is the limited number of good eats at decent prices. The Prado restaurant offers fantastic gourmet cuisine, but nothing a cheapskate can afford.

With this in mind, you should most definitely visit the lovely Japanese Friendship Garden and stop by the Tea Pavilion Cafe for lunch.

If you aren’t familiar with woot, here’s the deal, they are a site that sells something different at a great price, everyday. Normally, they have one item a day until it’s sold out. Today they are having one of their marvelously fun Woot Offs! A Woot Off is where they list something new as soon as the last thing sells out. There are tons of great things, tons of random things and occassionally, a suprise grab Bag-O-Crap. What fun!

  5. The Secret to Getting the Freshest Produce At Low Prices

    June 17, 2008 by ruetheday

Getting fresh veggies can be a cheapskate’s heaven. Not only will your food taste better when it’s fresher, it almost always is cheaper. You may be wondering why that is, but frequently things are picked way before they’re ripened to get sent out to the grocery store where they charge you full price. Fresher foods need to be sold fast, so they are usually priced to move.

Earlier we discussed why growing your own garden may not be a great idea financially. Now you can get the same flavorful food you would have gotten from a home garden without the time, stress and money it takes to grow your own.

  6. Entertain Your Kids For Under $1 A Day

    June 16, 2008 by ruetheday

Life Hacker has some great ideas on how to keep the tykes happy for cheap. They neglected to mention one of my childhood favorites, letting the kids play drums on your pots and pans. Also, I loved playing with the dogs and dressing my poor kitty as a baby and pushing her in the stroller.

Also good are crafts like macaroni art, popsicle stick buildings, scavenger hunts, flower pressings, making collages, chalk drawings and playing dress up.

What were your favorite childhood activities that cost practically nothing?

    June 15, 2008 by Jill

In the never ending quest of giving you a Cheapskate’s Handbook for a multitude of cities (you may have noticed it’s started with San Diego and San Francisco), allow me to introduce you to one of the most beautiful places to visit in all of San Francisco and one of the best free things to do in the city as well. The spot is also not known by many locals -let alone tourists, so it is relatively uncrowded, not to mention you’ll look really cool knowing about it. Plan to spend at least half a day here, as there is plenty to see and do.
