Travel: Avoid Hotel Astoria In San Francisco

June 2, 2008 by Jill

Maybe it’s just the fact that I don’t like being lied to, but this hotel was more of a disappointment than a number of roach motels I’ve stayed at. The hotel was found on Expedia and I booked it because it had a good location (right beside China Town) and offered tv and free wifi.

Business: Hotel Astoria
510 Bush Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
(415) 434-8889
Price:$$
Rating:2

When we arrive, we discover there is no tv. While I don’t require one, I still notice the listing specified they had a hair drier in every room. The internet is supposedly broken, which I need because my BF is taking online classes. The elevator is definitely broken with the door removed and caution tape surrounding an open shaft. Luckily, we are only on the 3rd floor, but the hotel is at least ten stories tall. The whole weekend we can not use the internet, our backs killed us from the crummy bed and we’re nervous about touching anything after finding a booger on the shower curtain.

Most bottom-of-the-line hotels at least provide an alarm clock, ice machine and a decent sized mirror, but low and behold…nothing. The least the staff can do is be nice, but the people who work here look disgusted that we would ask to use their microwave to reheat our leftovers.

Bottom line, a gross and cheap hotel with a rude staff is something even a cheapskate shouldn’t have to suffer through. Besides that, there are other hotels in the same price range in the safer part of the Tenderloin District that would have been ten times nicer.
